Database Design Types.

Using Flat File Databases

These are simple Database Design Types comprising a single 'table', the table would have similar items in them such as column one could be 'name', next 'address', next 'post code' etc. Rows would hold different names and addresses. This could then be used in a mailing list to print off labels.

Using Relational Databases

These are more complex Database Design Types that use multiple tables with joins between them. The purpose in relational database design is to logically organize large amounts of data into tables so that it can be queried to produce accurate, concise information that can be effectively used to help plan and control activity in an organization.

For example a company has a number of suppliers for its products, the same product can be supplied from different suppliers therefore there are two tables, suppliers + products.
Because there is a relationship between these two tables a join can be made between them.
This allows the comparison of products on price and specification from different suppliers and so the company can select the one that best suits its needs.

When a number of people work together in an organization, there is a requirement for various Database Design Types; forms of information to help with the operation, management, organisation. This requirement holds for all types of organisation, whether a manufacturing company, a public or private service organisation or retail outlet.
Information is central to the effective operation of any organization.

If it is to be effectively used, information needs to be carefully organised and managed into Database Design Types. On a computer this is done by a relational database management system (RDBMS) using Database Design Types.

The advantage of using Database Design Types and a RDBMS over a bespoke application is that the bespoke application are designed to a specific set of requests to resolve last years problems, the RDBMS can be interrogated using SQL (Structured Query Language) for "never asked before" and "one of a kind" problems. In other words it can resolve today’s problems today.
